If you're looking to bring out the best in yourself, you've found the right place. At Daruma Dojo, we believe that the warrior spirit is about transforming your body and mind into a place of physical and mental strength together with a winning mindset, both at the dojo and in life. When you put your heart into Karate, you will find all of this—and so much more.
WHY SHOULD YOU TRAIN KARATE?
Whether you want to learn self defense, a new sport, or just to stay in shape, karate has something for everyone. Karate improves physical and mental fitness, boosts focus, and encourages goal setting to propel you through life better equipped to conquer your obstacles.
WHY DARUMA DOJO?
We are a small school who are starting from the ground up. Our classes are small and focused, meaning you are sure to get the attention and coaching you need to be your best. You certainly won't feel like a face in the crowd, but part of a team.
Sensei Nolyn Sprouse has competed on the National level and, in addition to being successful for himself, has coached many other athletes at that same level. Contributing to the success of many youth and adult athletes both in competition and in traditional training, Sensei Sprouse is uniquely qualified in the Richmond area to make you the best Karate practitioner you can be.
Whether your aim is self defense, sport, or to connect with the tradition of Karate-do, we can help you set a course to fulfill your goals.
OUR CLASSES
Something For Everyone
TEENS/ADULTS -
In the teen/adult class, learn karate fundamentals, self defense, and improve your physical conditioning. Kihon (basics) are the building blocks of good karate. Kata are structured, prearranged forms to teach movement, power delivery, and the application of techniques. We take extra time to drill techniques against a gradually resistant partner to assure your skill development. In this class, you will get in better shape and learn to defend yourself. Additionally, you will relieve stress, improve focus, and develop confidence to tackle life.
KUMITE
We spar regularly in a controlled environment. Using an agreed-upon set of rules and boundaries, students test themselves against one another to grow in their skills as well as boost their confidence in their abilities. For many students, kumite becomes their favorite "sport." Pee Wees "belt spar", meaning they each have strips of belt that can be removed to score. Youth students spar semi-contact, with light contact to the body and NO head contact. Adults may use full contact to the body with controlled or accidental, "skin touch" head contact. We emphasize the importance of both having a realistic ability to use controlled techniques, as well as taking safety seriously.
KIDS -
Our kids class is for children ages 5 to 11. 5 through 7 year olds are on the Pee Wee course, focusing on strong basics, good attention, self-discipline, and excellent listening. Their expectations are to become acclimated to karate while having a blast. Students 7 through 11 learn more rigorously, with higher expectations and a stronger focus on technique. Your child will show improved focus, learn to respect others, and get tired out in the process!
KOBUDO
Kobudo is the weapon-based sister art of Karate. Can't have one without the other! Bo (staff), nunchaku, and many more make up our kobudo practice.
